Computer Safety Tips:

  • Keep your operating system up to date.  On PCs use the automatic-update feature in Microsoft Windows.
  • Install an Internet Firewall.
  • Use and update your anti-virus software.
  • Install a program that scans your computer for spyware and run it weekly.  Spyware scanners include Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, Spy Sweeper by Webroot Software and PestPatrol by Computer Associates.
  • Never click on Web links in an email; instead type the address into your browser.
  • Consider using Mozilla Firefox as your browser, which has fewer critical security holes.
  • Change your passwords regularly, and make sure they include upper and lower case letters, numbers and at least one character such as "@" or "$" etc. if acceptable.

Cleaning Your Computer (Windows OS)

To clean up your computer, do the following:

  1. Click on START
  2. Click on PROGRAMS
  3. Click on the ACCESSORIES folder
  4. Click on SYSTEM TOOLS
  5. Click on DISK CLEANUP

This program will search out all the unneeded files on your computer.  When it asks, place a check mark in each of the boxes and click OK.  It will ask you if you're sure, click YES.

(For advanced users:  Start > Run > %temp% > Select all > delete)

Now that you have cleaned your hard-drive of all the unnecessary files - you need to let the computer organize the information on the hard drive for best performance...

  • Click on START
  • Click on PROGRAMS
  • Click on the ACCESSORIES folder
  • Click on SYSTEM TOOLS
  • Click on DISK DEFRAGMENTER

Once the program has finished it will ask if you want to view a report.  You do NOT need to view this.  Now reboot your computer.

Next, open your browser and clean up the temporary internet files and cookies.

  • Internet Explorer:  Go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS
    • Next, delete Cookies
    • Next, delete ALL Files
  • Firefox:  Go to TOOLS > OPTIONS
    • Click on the Privacy Icon, then click on the CLEAR button to the right of COOKIES and CACHE
  • AOL 9.0: Go to SETTINGS on the toolbar > INTERNET (WEB) OPTIONS
    • Click on the CLEAR MY FOOTPRINTS tab, the the CLEAR MY FOOTPRINTS button.

This process is something you should consider doing at least once a month.
